![]() Back to Starbucks Store | History of Tazo | Varieties of Tea The Tazo Blend Most large tea-purchasing companies buy what is known as "Blended Standards." These blended teas offer tea-buying companies a fairly consistent - albeit ordinary quality of tea - year around. Because the teas are blended at the source, sometimes inferior teas are combined with more quality teas in order to cut costs. Unlike these other tea-buying companies, Tazo purchases only "original" teas that are immediately packed as soon as they are picked from the garden. These teas are quickly shipped to Tazo to avoid any deterioration that sometimes comes from being kept in an unprotected warehouse. It is upon arrival at Tazo that the true art of tea-making begins. Founder Steven Smith, who started blending tea about 27 years ago, is passionate about his tea-making and feels that freshness and quality of ingredient are most important. With his vast knowledge of over 500 black and green teas (plus a large number of botanicals), he knows what to expect from the flavor profiles of these products that have just arrived. It is here that garden-variety teas mingle with lush botanicals and unique spices, a result of Smith's keen sense of taste and smell. Prior to combining teas, Smith writes a formula. Once this blend formula is roughed out, Tazo teamasters blend the teas together, adjusting them slightly if necessary. Once the final blend is decided upon, Smith and his team complete the final formula, keeping a master document on file for future blends.
